Mercedes-Benz EQS rollout led by AMG 53 in Australia

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 will be the only EQS variant available at launch with the others arriving later in 2022.

When the Mercedes-Benz EQS touches down on Australian soil in early 2022, it’ll initially be available only in high-performance AMG EQS 53 guise.

Other EQS models will arrive later in 2022 according to a Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson, adding this is the strategy the brand is taking with the rollout of the new model.

Pricing has yet to be revealed for the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 and will be announced closer to launch.

In addition to the AMG model, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the EQS range will include the single-motor EQS 450+ and the dual-motor EQS 580.

Both EQS 450+ and EQS 580 models have already gone on sale in Europe.

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 is powered by dual electric motors and sends torque through an all-wheel drive system. It produces 484kW of power and 950Nm of torque and has a 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds.

Opting for the AMG Dynamic Plus package ups peak power to 560kW and peak torque to 1020Nm for a 3.4-second sprint to 100km/h.

The package also gets a unique Performance sound, with “onboard shakers and loudspeakers make the power of the electric motors clear even when stationary”.

Regardless of which model you opt for, the EQS 53 packs a 107.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack good for up to 580km of range on the WLTP test cycle.

An 11kW onboard AC charger is standard, and a 22kW unit is optional. Hooked up to a public DC fast charger the EQS will charge at up to 200kW.

The EQS 53 also features standard air suspension and rear-wheel steering, while its drag coefficient is just 0.23.

415mm front and 378mm rear brakes are standard, backed by a regenerative braking system capable of operating at up to 300kW. That might sound like overkill, but the EQS weighs more than 2700kg so it’ll take some stopping.

The way to tell the AMG apart from the regular EQS is by looking for its 21- or 22-inch alloy wheels, and its unique rear spoiler, front splitter, sill panels and grille.

Inside the EQS 53 gets synthetic leather upholstery, along with an array of sporty AMG touch points. It also gets the huge, 141cm-wide MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system as standard.

The EQS 450+ and EQS 580 also feature a 107.8kWh battery, with claimed range of up to 770km on the WLTP cycle.

The EQS 450+ is rear-wheel drive and produces 245kW of power and 568Nm of torque. The 0-100km/h sprint takes 6.2 seconds.

The EQS 580 4Matic is all-wheel drive, puts out 385kW and 855Nm, and does the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.3 seconds.

When the EQS arrives it will join the existing Mercedes-Benz EQC and EQA SUVs in the company’s all-electric range.
